UOCMaps
Early last year we opened a pilot test of a geo-location project for the members of the Alumni and Humanities degree. From this experience, the UOCMaps came about which is a mobile App for direct geo-location. The project was led by the Alumni Department of the University. The UOCMaps mobile application lets the members of the UOC community around the world to find and contact each other. This social tool aims to encourage a feeling of belonging and community, and aid communication among its members. The application can be downloaded from the Play Store and App Store.
The iCommunity group has developed a viewer of this data App for the UOC Campus. The viewer is a web map that shows all the people in the community who have given their permission to be geo-located, segmented by profile, and their campus contact via email address. This application allows the possibility to select among various types of maps.
The UOCMaps viewer has been developed using jsp, html, css and javascript. One of the important points of the viewer has been accessibility. The Users can navigate, zoom, and situate themselves on the map, via keyboard shortcuts, to enable access for people with visual disabilities and to minimize dependence on the mouse.
The display is available in the University campus, under the heading Community from mid-April. There is also a widget that users can add to the home page.
From the iCommunity, we would like to express our gratitude to the UOC's Department "Atenció a l'estudiant" for their collaboration with the project.
